Scientific Seminar: Profitable wood production in the Mediterranean: future or fantasy?

The themes of this year’s Scientific Seminar presentations by the keynote speakers were:

Innovative uses of Mediterranean wood for products and energy (Professor Massimo Fragiacomo, University of Sassari-Alghero, Italy)

Possibilities for cost effective wood mobilisation in Mediterranean forests (Dr. Nike Krajnc, Slovenian Forestry Institute, Slovenia)

Human and social dimensions of forest innovation: unlocking the factors for profitable combinations of Ecosystem Services provision in the Mediterranean (Glòria Domínguez, University of Lleida, Spain)

The presentations were followed by an open discussion between keynote speakers, participants and a panel of young researchers.

Nine posters were presented for the session “Perspectives from young scientists” on the theme of the Scientific Seminar. Each young researcher had 1.5 minutes to present their poster after which there was a debate amongst them with questions from the audience. The Prize for the best poster was presented to Niovi Zarkada of EMaTTech, Greece for her poster on “Wastewater treatment via constructed wetlands: Effectiveness of a pilot hybrid system in removal of nutrients”.

Finally, three Case Studies were presented describing successful innovative business models for wood production in Mediterranean forests. Participants discussed lessons learned, replication, challenges and opportunities in a world café session.
